* 28. July 1925, Sofia - 13. November 1997, Paris
André Boucourechliev was one of the important actors in the era of serialism and aleatorics in Paris from the 1950s to the 1970s. In his most important compositions, he grants the performers decisive freedom and guides them with carefully conceived structures, templates and instructions toward their own solutions created spontaneously in concert of his music, which remain unique in every performance. His most important works for piano include his piano concerto (1975), the 6 Études d'après Piranési (1975) and the various works titled Archipel I-V in different instrumentations. In addition to his compositional activities, Boucourechliev was also active as a pianist, writer and musicologist. He wrote countless essays on the music of his time but also monographs on the old classics (e.g. on Schumann, Chopin and Beethoven).

Regarding the connection between serialism and the indeterminate approach to music, Boucourechliev wrote:
"The clear path of yesterday's works, their inevitable, predictable and reassuring result, is now replaced by chance, a musical time that is open to a thousand possible endpoints. Yesterday, until recently an unyielding organizational system, serial music became a form of thinking, a way of life of time in its discontinuity and purposelessness, the moment to reveal the fleeting constellations of a work....".

Regarding the 5 works called Archipel I-V, Boucourechliev explains his inspiration from a longer stay in the USA:
